Comet Talk: The Utah War of 1857
Join us at CCC's Page Center or via Zoom for this Comet Talk!

The Utah War of 1857 had far reaching impacts on the Inter-Mountain West. Lee's Ferry, named for the fabled John D. Lee was one of the participants in events of that year and Fort Bridger was burned to the ground as a result of this war. All of the far reaching events took place in what was then Utah Territory. This talk will focus on the archaeological record left by the events of this "War" with emphasis placed on how these items inform us about how rapidly the region changed as a result of the 1857 War.

Dudley Gardner received his PhD from the University of New Mexico and has since published multiple reports and articles on the Native Americans in the Upper Colorado River Basin. He has worked in archaeology in this region for 45 years. His research interests include prehistoric sites and historical archeological sites and he has worked and published in both areas. Gardner was born in Colorado; after graduating high school he served two tours of duty in Vietnam then went back east to study at Lee University where he earned his BA. He has worked at Colorado State University, Western Wyoming Community College and Coconino Community College.
